US human rights report reveals the tragic state of freedom of expression in Iran
Amid continuing protests throughout what is called Iran, human rights organizations in the United States announced today that Tehran has imprisoned 57 writers last year.
The American PEN Freedom to Write Association added that Iran ranked second after China in terms of detaining the largest number of writers.
Iran is also considered the largest prison for women writers in the world, with the arrest of 16 writers and journalists, according to the American Freedom of the Pen Association.
These statistics came as part of the annual report of the American PEN Association on the state of freedom of expression last year.
The report emphasized that China and Iran exercise the most severe restrictions against freedom of expression, and are considered the worst places for writers in the world.
