Shocking Numbers: Road Accidents in Ahwaz Reach Record Levels
Ahwaz University of Medical Sciences has reported that approximately 27,000 citizens have been injured in road accidents across Ahwaz, highlighting the deteriorating state of road infrastructure in the region’s cities.
Ahwaz ranks among the deadliest regions for road accidents in the area. Over the past two decades, the majority of these incidents have been attributed to the poor condition of road infrastructure, despite Ahwaz’s wealth of oil and gas resources. However, the Iranian occupation continues to exploit Ahwaz’s riches, leaving its citizens impoverished and its services and infrastructure in shambles.
Arif Asl Sharhani, spokesperson for the Emergency Department at Jundishapur Ahwaz University of Medical Sciences, stated that in the past eight months alone, 23,036 emergency calls and 15,842 urban traffic incidents have been recorded in connection with road accidents.
Sharhani added that these accidents resulted in 26,909 injuries, with 23,152 individuals transported to medical centers and 3,611 treated on-site.
The spokesperson highlighted that the main causes of these accidents include the crumbling road infrastructure, such as the lack of standardized roads, absence of traffic signals, sharp curves, deep valleys, frequent landslides, road blockages, and landslips. These factors have significantly contributed to the rise in road accidents in Ahwaz.
Sharhani also pointed out that unauthorized overtaking, insufficient road lighting, and heavy traffic have played major roles in the increasing accident rates in Ahwaz.
Last year, 19,029 individuals (14,362 men and 4,667 women) were injured in traffic accidents in the Arab state of Ahwaz, marking a 16% increase from 2022, when 16,340 people (12,369 men and 3,971 women) were injured in similar incidents.
It is estimated that the road accident mortality rate in Ahwaz is 30 deaths per 100,000 people, far exceeding the national average of 18 deaths per 100,000 people in the so-called geographic region of Iran.
