On the world day against the death penalty: memorial ceremony in Hamburg condemns the execution of six Ahwazi activists

On October 11, 2025, the German city of Hamburg witnessed a memorial event organized by Amnesty International in cooperation with the Ahwaz Human Rights Organization, marking the World Day Against the Death Penalty.

The ceremony took place in front of the Hamburg Parliament building, where human rights activists, members of the Ahwazi and Kurdish communities, and representatives of German civil society organizations gathered to express their strong condemnation of the ongoing executions carried out by the Iranian regime against political dissidents.

The event aimed to shed light on the grave human rights violations in Iran, particularly the use of the death penalty against activists and protesters, in blatant violation of international law. Participants held up photos of the six Ahwazi activists, along with a Kurdish political prisoner, who were executed on October 4, and chanted slogans calling for an end to executions and the release of political prisoners.

Several speeches were delivered during the ceremony, in which speakers emphasized the international community’s responsibility to confront the crimes committed against non-Persian peoples in Iran. They urged the United Nations and the European Union to take concrete steps to halt the wave of executions and to hold accountable those responsible for issuing and carrying out these unjust sentences.

In a statement read during the event, the Ahwaz Human Rights Organization affirmed that the execution of the six Ahwazi activists followed sham trials that lacked the most basic standards of justice, describing the executions as an attempt to silence voices calling for freedom and dignity in Ahwaz.

At the end of the ceremony, participants lit candles in memory of the victims, reaffirming their continued struggle to abolish the death penalty and to defend human rights in Ahwaz and other non-Persian regions of Iran.
