Marginalization continues: drinking water crisis in fallahiyeh exposes Iran’s neglect

Residents of Fallahiyeh in occupied Ahwaz continue to suffer daily from the ongoing crisis of drinking water shortages and weak water pressure, amid soaring temperatures and persistent disregard by Iranian authorities to address the problem.

According to local sources, dozens of villages and neighborhoods in the city experience frequent water outages, in addition to the poor quality of water reaching households.

Residents have complained about high salinity levels even after the so-called “purification” processes, rendering the water unfit for human consumption.

One resident said: “Despite repeated promises to resolve the issue of weak water pressure, we have seen no concrete action so far, while we endure unbearable conditions with temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius.”

The resident noted that locals have been forced to rely on water tankers or purchase bottled water at high prices to meet their daily needs, further increasing the economic burden on Ahwazi families already struggling with difficult living conditions.

Previously, human rights organizations accused Iran’s authorities of pursuing a deliberate policy of marginalization and neglect in Ahwazi towns and villages, depriving them of basic services, foremost among them access to clean drinking water.

This crisis comes amid ongoing projects to divert Ahwaz’s rivers to Persian provinces, which has drained the region of its water resources and created an environment of thirst and drought in areas once historically known for their water abundance.
