Human Rights Report: 16% of Executions Target Ahwazis

Mai Sato, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran, expressed deep concern over the human rights situation in Iran through the publication of her report on Wednesday, March 12.

This report focuses on gender-related aspects and social discrimination in Iran, revealing alarming facts about execution practices.

Mai Sato stated that between 2010 and 2023, at least 154 political prisoners were executed in Iran. Among them, 16% were Ahwazis.

Statistics also indicate that 49% of executions targeted Kurds, while 29% affected the Baloch population, highlighting the widespread nature of the execution phenomenon beyond geographic and ethnic boundaries.

In this context, Mai Sato called for an end to executions in general and the abolition of the death penalty, especially in cases involving crimes committed by minors.

Beyond the issue of executions, the report also addressed the widespread discrimination against women in the territory known as Iran. Mai Sato emphasized that current laws severely restrict women’s rights in areas such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and access to justice.

The report also highlighted social and religious discrimination against minorities in the country.

Additionally, Mai Sato shed light on the strong resistance of women against unjust laws, such as the “Hijab and Chastity” laws.

At the conclusion of the report, Mai Sato regretted the Iranian government’s lack of cooperation in allowing her to visit the country to investigate human rights conditions. She also thanked human rights organizations and NGOs for their cooperation in preparing the report.
