Human Rights Campaign Against the Execution of Four Ahwazi Prisoners in Sepidar Prison
After 114 days of solitary confinement for four Ahwazi political prisoners sentenced to death—Moein Khanfari, Ali Moqaddam, Mohammad Reza Moqaddam, and Adnan Mousavi—at Sepidar Prison in Ahwaz, social media users have expressed deep concern over the lack of information regarding their condition.
From Tuesday evening to Wednesday morning, a group of civil and political activists, along with the detainees’ family members, used the hashtags #110DaysSolitary and #NoToExecution to demand an end to the ongoing torture of these four death-row prisoners in solitary confinement and to call for their transfer to a general ward.
These users highlighted that Khanfari, Mojdam, Moqaddam, and Mousavi had been allowed to contact their families only once since their transfer to solitary confinement. They also emphasized that the lack of information about their condition, combined with their prolonged isolation, has heightened their families’ distress.
Khanfari, Mojdam, Moqaddam, and Mousavi were transferred from Sheiban Prison to solitary confinement at Sepidar Prison in Ahwaz on October 14 in preparation for their execution.
On November 1, eleven organizations and media outlets issued a statement warning of the imminent risk of execution for these four Ahwazi political prisoners in Sepidar and calling for the immediate cancellation of their death sentences.
The statement also stressed the necessity of granting these prisoners access to legal representation, allowing them to meet with their families, and ensuring a fair and public trial.
Golak Ebrahimi Iraee, a political prisoner held at Evin Prison, reposted part of her October message in response to the transfer of Khanfari, Mojdam, Moqaddam, and Mousavi to solitary confinement. The message, titled “To Abolish the Death Penalty, We Must Rise Against It Completely,” was shared alongside the hashtags #110DaysSolitary and #NoToExecution.
In her message, Iraee wrote: “Several Ahwazi political prisoners have been placed in solitary confinement to carry out their execution. If hearing this news affects us less than similar cases involving people who resemble us, it means we have the potential to become what we refuse to acknowledge.”
The account “Aban” also posted on X: “No to execution means no to execution. Keep your doubts and speculations to yourself.”
Fouad Chouban, uncle of Artin Rahmani and a member of the Dadkhah family, wrote on X: “Four political prisoners—Mohammad Reza Moqaddam, Moein Khanfari, Ali Mojdam, and Adnan Mousavi—have been sentenced to death under the unjust laws of the Islamic Republic, and their lives could be taken at any moment. Let us raise our voices as one: No to execution, no to the mullahs!”
Arash Sadeghi, a human rights activist and former political prisoner, wrote on X: “Solitary confinement is terrifying enough, but imagine spending more than 110 days in a cell with no contact with anyone, no news from the outside world, and worst of all, waiting for death… Waking up each morning not knowing if today will be your last? Going to bed every night thinking this could be your final night?”
The human rights activist emphasized that no one knows what has happened to these four death-row prisoners during this time, adding: “They exist. They are still alive, which means there is still something that can be done. They need to be heard before it’s too late.”
Adnan Mousavi, Ali Mojdam, Moein Khanfari, and Mohammad Reza Moqaddam were arrested in 2017 and 2018, along with two others, Habib Dars and Salem Mousavi. They were sentenced to death by an Iranian occupation court in Ahwaz.
They were accused in court of killing two Basij members, Ali Salehi Mojd and Younes Bahar, in Abadan, as well as a police officer, Allah Nazar Safari, and a conscript, Mohammad Reza Rafiei Nasab, in Bandar Khor Mousa, due to their alleged membership in the “Harakat al-Nidhal” movement.
