After his health deteriorated… Ahwazi prisoner Hassan Al-Suwarei granted temporary leave from sheiban prison

Reliable human rights sources revealed that the Iranian authorities have granted a temporary medical leave to the Ahwazi political prisoner Hassan Al-Suwarei, known as Abu Khalid, after six years of continuous detention in the notorious Sheiban Prison, located in the capital, Ahwaz.

According to the sources, this decision came due to the deterioration of Al-Suwarei’s health, as he suffers from diabetes and chronic health complications amid deliberate medical neglect faced by political prisoners in Iranian prisons, particularly in occupied Ahwaz.

Al-Suwarei, who is married and a father of two, is a resident of the Al-Thawra neighborhood in Ahwaz.

He was arrested in 2019 on charges related to an armed attack that targeted a military parade of Iranian forces in the city of Ahwaz.

He was subjected to harsh interrogations inside detention centers affiliated with Iranian intelligence before being referred to Branch 2 of the Iranian Revolutionary Court, where he was tried on charges of “counter-terrorism” and “membership in an opposition group.”

The court initially sentenced him to 15 years in prison, later reduced to 11 years and six months. After the investigations ended, he was transferred to Ward 5 of Sheiban Prison, and later to Ward 7 in April 2020, following protests inside the prison. Ward 7 is known for isolating political prisoners and for emergency cases.
