Khour Mousa Suffers from Catastrophic Pollution Due to Iranian Occupation Policies

As part of Iran’s ongoing policy of environmental destruction in Ahwaz, environmental activists have revealed a severe environmental decline in Khour Mousa, one of the largest and most important river estuaries in Ahwaz, located in the northwestern part of the Arabian Gulf. This deterioration is due to the significant increase in water and soil pollution.

The discharge of industrial and oil wastewater has endangered biodiversity in Khour Mousa, threatening the local ecosystem.

Khour Mousa, which contains more than 20 branches, is one of the most vital marine habitats and waterways in Ahwaz. It is home to pristine islands and more than 20 river branches, providing a habitat for many rare aquatic species and migratory birds.

Additionally, Khour Mousa plays a strategic role in the maritime industry and fishing sector, making it one of the most significant economic hubs in the region.

However, in recent years, with the expansion of the oil and gas industry and the growth of Imam Khomeini Port, industrial activities in the area have intensified. Among these, the petrochemical industry has significantly increased water and soil pollution, particularly near river estuaries, posing a direct threat to both local and migratory species.

Environmental problems in the region are not limited to water pollution but also extend to severe threats against marine habitats and bird populations. Human activities such as shoreline modifications and vegetation destruction have led to the extinction of many local species and have endangered the habitats of migratory birds.

Additionally, overfishing and illegal fishing have contributed to a decline in aquatic animal populations, further straining biodiversity.

These issues are exacerbated by the lack of a comprehensive environmental protection plan, the absence of sustainable management for estuaries and islands, and the minimal attention given to local tourism and the area’s cultural potential.

Experts emphasize the urgent need for strict policies on industrial wastewater discharge and stringent monitoring of petrochemical activities to preserve the marine environment.

According to a report by activists, Khour Mousa is one of the most ecologically sensitive marine systems in Ahwaz and plays a crucial role in the local economy and the livelihoods of the population. Despite its immense natural and cultural potential, the region faces environmental and administrative challenges that require immediate intervention.

Experts stress that to protect the marine environment in Khour Mousa and ensure its sustainability, responsible authorities must adopt effective scientific and administrative strategies.
