Diversion of Ahwazi water deepens crisis: water outages hit Al-Muhammarah
A sharp decrease in the flow rate of the Karun Riverparticularly in the water intake section of the Western Karun Water Treatment Plant in the city of Al-Muhammarahhas led to the shutdown of the facility and a water outage affecting several villages in the city’s central area.
Local residents have accused the Iranian occupation authorities of failing to address the crisis, particularly after the diversion of water from Ahwazi rivers to Persian regions, according to local testimonies.
The people of Al-Muhammarah expressed deep frustration over repeated water cuts, which have severely impacted their daily livesespecially amid soaring temperatures.
Ahwazi citizens voiced anger and dissatisfaction with the Iranian regime’s ongoing negligence in resolving the city’s drinking water crisis, despite repeated promises to do so.
Over the past several years, Iranian authorities have constructed multiple dams on Ahwazi rivers and diverted water to Persian provincesa practice the local population views as a deliberate act of marginalization and discrimination.
Looking ahead, the flow of the Karun River is expected to decrease further starting this week. While “efforts” are being made to maintain the flow at 150 cubic meters per second, these measures appear insufficient to resolve the ongoing crisis.
