A New environmental disaster threatens the Huweiza marsh amid deliberate human rights neglect in Ahwaz
The Huweiza Marsh region in Ahwaz is experiencing a worsening environmental catastrophe due to leaks of crude oil from abandoned wells, resulting in the contamination of large areas of water and agricultural land. This has caused significant damage to the ecosystem and poses a serious threat to both plant and animal life.
This incident, which has gone unaddressed by the Iranian occupation authorities, clearly reflects the ongoing policy of systematic neglect that afflicts the Ahwazi regions. While the area’s natural resources are being exploited by oil companies affiliated with the Iranian regime, the local Ahwazi population is excluded from their rightful share of these resources and continues to face high unemployment and harsh living conditions.
Ahwazi activists believe that what is happening in the Huweiza Marsh is not merely a technical failure, but a direct result of the occupation’s neglect of its responsibility to protect the environment and ensure the well-being of local communities.
According to these activists, oil extraction companies operating in the region fail to adhere to recognized environmental standards. They operate without oversight or accountability, leading to repeated disasters for which both people and nature bear the cost.
In this context, Ahwazis are raising their voices to demand their legitimate rights: the right to a clean environment, the right to decent employment, and the right to live free from discrimination and marginalization.
The local population holds the Iranian occupation authorities fully responsible for the environmental and living deterioration in their areas and calls for international intervention to monitor the situation and ensure an end to the repeated violations against both nature and humanity.
