A new crime by the iranian occupation against the cultural heritage of the Ahwazi people
Ahwazi activists have highlighted a new crime that adds to the record of Iranian occupation violations against the cultural heritage of the Ahwazi people. A man has destroyed an ancient Elamite mound in the city of Susa a site of great historical significance dating back to the Elamite era and registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
This crime is part of a series of deliberate attempts to undermine cultural and historical sites that form an essential part of Ahwazi identity.
Although this incident was carried out by an individual, the Iranian occupation bears full responsibility for its negligence in protecting archaeological and historical sites in Ahwaz. The regime has continuously ignored the rights and cultural heritage of the Ahwazi people.
The delayed intervention of security forces despite preventing the site’s complete destruction further confirms the regime’s failure to preserve the history of the peoples under its control.
This crime comes amid an ongoing policy of neglect and systematic destruction of Ahwazi Arab cultural heritage.
The six-month prison sentence given to the perpetrator cannot be considered a sufficient deterrent to protect cultural heritage. Rather, it sends a message that the Iranian regime lacks serious commitment to safeguarding these historical sites.
