Injury of Ahwazi political prisoner Habib daras in sheiban prison
In a serious escalation of human rights violations in Iran’s prisons, Ahwazi political prisoner sentenced to death, Habib Idrees, was injured during violent clashes that broke out in Ward 5 of Sheiban Prison, north of Ahwaz city.
The clashes erupted after prison authorities deliberately mixed political prisoners with inmates convicted of serious crimes such as drug trafficking and theft.
According to credible reports, this forced and unlawful mixing took place despite repeated warnings from human rights organizations, resulting in several injuries among prisoners, while prison management failed to intervene or take any measures to protect the inmates.
What happened constitutes a blatant violation of the “separation of crimes” principle stipulated in Iran’s prison regulations, which require the segregation of inmates based on the type of charges and their legal status.
Human rights sources emphasize that this incident is part of Iran’s systematic approach to pressure Ahwazi detainees and eliminate them indirectly.
Ward 5 of Sheiban Prison, designed to hold only 100 prisoners, currently houses more than 125 political detainees, crammed into rooms of less than 20 square meters, with some cells holding more than 20 inmates in extremely harsh conditions.
The Karun Human Rights Organization expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation in Ward 5, warning that the continued mixing of political prisoners with convicts of violent crimes poses a direct threat to their lives and safety.
The organization called on judicial authorities and prison supervisors to immediately reapply the principle of separating crimes, ensure the physical and psychological safety of political prisoners, reduce overcrowding, and improve detention conditions in line with international standards.
